Andrew Somers
Biography and Professional Background
Andrew Somers is Director of Research at Inclusive Reading Technologies, a California nonprofit dedicated to improving readability for all. He is the creator of the Accessible Perceptual Contrast Algorithm (APCA), the candidate contrast method under evaluation for W3C Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 3.0, and lead author of the APCA Readability Criterion (ARC).
Andrew brings more than 35 years of professional experience in color science, digital imaging, and visual perception from the Hollywood film and television industry, where his credits include three Emmy awards. His work has spanned cinematography, visual effects, and the industry’s transition from chemical to digital imaging.
After his own eyesight became severely impaired due to early-onset cataracts, Andrew redirected his deep expertise in color and perception toward visual accessibility research, with a focus on the science of reading on electronic displays.
